GatewayC is Scotland’s leading earlier diagnosis education resource.

The free resource is supported by the Detect Cancer Earlier (DCE) Programme, delivered through the Centre for Sustainable Delivery (CfSD) and NHS Education for Scotland (NES).

Primary care health professionals can access a wealth of free educational courses and resources to aid referral decision-making and facilitate earlier cancer detection.

The resource is evidence-based and available to any member of the primary care clinical team including GPs (locums, salaried and trainee GPs), the wider practice team (including nurses and advanced practitioners) and all other relevant professionals such as pharmacy, dentistry, and optometry.

Independent research carried out across NHS Scotland tested the effectiveness of GatewayC - this identified:

  • 4 in 5 primary care clinicians feel more confident in referring patients with suspected cancer;
  • The proportion of those feeling ‘very confident’ in recognising signs and symptoms when a patient presents quadrupled after the training;
  • Stress levels when making referral decisions have fallen, with those being ‘less stressed’ almost doubling.

The content has been clinically reviewed to ensure that it is relevant to NHS Scotland and aligned to the latest Scottish Referral Guidelines (SRGs) for Suspected Cancer.

22 courses are available with additional educational resources being constantly released.
